The Gathering at Salem

During the day Paul Allen held a class lecture at Salem State College, and then another at Bioengineering in Salem.  Then after getting to know the city of Salem he and Rebecca Sullivan (also from CAT) crashed at the Wyman house, and fell in love with Phil and Bev's fawn and white Indian Runner Ducks.

The evening lecture at The Gathering had a little over 70 in attendance.  Rebecca sang two songs.  State Rep. John Keenan said a few words.  The Mayor's Renewable Energy Task Force was present, and the Mayor's Assistant Tom Watkins represented the group.

At the meeting were Salem State Professors, an MIT Prof., a number of renewable energy companies, North of England inward investment, and the Boston Cymrodorion (Welsh Society).

Nick Lewis from Poles Apart introduced Paul Allen.  Nick grew up in Swansea, Wales and visited The Centre for Alternative Technology when he was in school.  So, he had an insider's view.

Paul presented his work with Zero Carbon Britain, and it was positive and exciting message.  It lasted about an hour with a short break to change the tape (it was being video recorded), and during that time Jason Truluck-Williams from the Boston Cymrodorion introduced the Welsh society of Boston, Sue Macdonald from CeltiConnect described working the the BioTech sector and some the ecological developments and concerns, and Dara Kahn from North of England talked about her work.  When Paul completed his lecture the question and answers took off.  They could have gone far longer, but we had to put a cap on it to keep the meeting from going to midnight.

After the meeting a number of us gathered at Salem Beer Works for beers and burgers, and stayed out till the Witching Hour (hey, it is Salem, MA).  Good connections - good times.  More of these to come.

Zero Carbon Seminar with Paul Allen
from The Centre for Alternative Technology

Paul Allen

September 10th, 2009 at 7pm in Salem, MA at The Vault 217 Essex Street Paul Allen from the Centre for Alternative Technology in Machynlleth Mid-Wales will be presenting his work as co-author of the plan Zero Carbon Britain.  Zero Carbon Britain is a plan to eliminate emissions, and break dependence on imported energy.  The plan has become a blueprint for adapting public policy and change for the Welsh Assembly Government and the British Parliament.

Paul Allen is the development director of The Centre for Alternative Technology (CAT) in Wales, one of Europe’s leading demonstration sites for renewable enrgy and green technologies. He is the designer of many renewable energy systems for CAT and has himself lived for many years 'off the grid'. He is currently touring the United States by mass transit, and he is interested in making contact with groups wishing to set up ‘post-carbon’ demonstration centers similar to CAT. Paul will share his views on the future of environmentalism, and what we can all do to speed up the eventual adoption of clean technologies and practices by mainstream society.
